Behind the Scenes: Designing Vanessa Williams’ Wedding Invitations
An exclusive look at the creative process behind the bespoke wedding stationery for multi-platinum artist Vanessa Williams and Jim Skrip
When multi-platinum recording artist and actress Vanessa Williams approached Adorn Invitations to design her wedding stationery, we knew this would be a project that demanded something truly extraordinary. The collaboration with Williams and her partner Jim Skrip presented us with the exciting challenge of creating invitations that would reflect both their sophisticated taste and the deeply personal story of their romance.
About Vanessa Williams
Vanessa Williams stands as one of the entertainment industry’s most accomplished and versatile performers. With over 25 million records sold worldwide, she’s achieved the rare distinction of scoring number-one and top-ten hits across multiple Billboard charts, spanning Pop, Dance, R&B, Adult Contemporary, Holiday, Latin, Gospel, and Jazz genres.
Her illustrious career has earned recognition from every major industry award body, including four Emmy nominations, 17 Grammy nominations (11 individual), a Tony nomination, three SAG Award nominations, seven NAACP Image Awards, and three Satellite Awards. Most notably, she won a Golden Globe, Grammy, and Oscar for Best Original Song for “Colours of the Wind” from Disney’s Pocahontas.
Beyond music, Williams has made her mark on Broadway, film, and television, whilst also authoring the New York Times bestseller “You Have No Idea” with her mother Helen Williams in 2012. A mother of four—Melanie, Jillian, Devin, and Sasha—she divides her time between Los Angeles and New York.
Understanding the Brief
Our design process began with establishing the tone and atmosphere Vanessa envisioned for her wedding day. Understanding that every detail would contribute to the overall experience, we invested considerable time in getting to know both clients personally and professionally.
The breakthrough came when we discovered the significance behind their chosen theme. Vanessa and Jim’s romantic Egyptian floral motif wasn’t merely aesthetic—it was deeply personal, representing their international love story that began when they met in Egypt three years before their wedding. This revelation became the cornerstone of our design philosophy.
To capture their vision accurately, we asked Vanessa to curate a Pinterest board featuring her wedding inspirations, including styling preferences, thematic elements, and décor ideas. This collaborative approach ensured that every design decision aligned with their dreams for the day.
After extensive discussions, we settled on a sophisticated colour palette of burgundy and gold, perfectly complementing their Egyptian floral theme. The rich, jewel-toned burgundy would provide elegant depth, whilst the gold accents would add luxury and warmth—colours that would later prove instrumental in bringing their vision to life.
The Design Process
Our creative journey began with comprehensive research. Our design team spent countless hours studying Egyptian floral patterns, traditional motifs, and contemporary interpretations that could honour the couple’s theme whilst maintaining modern sophistication.
We developed detailed mood boards that captured the essence of their vision, exploring various textures, patterns, and colour applications. This preparatory work was crucial in ensuring that every element of the final design would resonate with meaning.
True to our traditional approach, our designers began with pen and paper, sketching initial concepts before moving to digital refinement. This old-school methodology allows for pure creativity, unrestricted by software limitations. Through collaborative brainstorming sessions, we refined multiple concepts, with many early drafts serving as stepping stones to the final design.
The breakthrough came when we perfected the base shape for our precision laser-cut pocket design. Once this foundation was established, we could focus on the intricate details that would make these invitations truly exceptional.

Innovative Production Techniques
At Adorn Invitations, we pride ourselves on combining cutting-edge technology with time-honoured craftsmanship. For Vanessa and Jim’s invitations, we employed precision laser cutting to create intricate pocket designs that would serve as the canvas for our artistic vision.
Working with machinery dating back to the 1850s, we meticulously crafted custom ink colours to achieve the perfect Marcella shade that Vanessa and Jim had envisioned. This attention to detail in colour matching demonstrates our commitment to bringing our clients’ exact vision to life.
Each invitation was personally hand-assembled by our team members, ensuring that every piece met our exacting standards. The mounting of printed sheets onto laser-cut pockets required precision and patience—there was no room for error at this final stage.
The Finishing Touch
The defining moment came with our decision to incorporate 14-carat gold-plated lotus leaves as the finishing touch for each invitation. This luxurious detail not only elevated the overall design but also paid homage to the Egyptian theme whilst adding a touch of botanical elegance that reflected the couple’s love story.
The lotus leaf, a symbol of rebirth and purity in Egyptian culture, provided the perfect metaphor for Vanessa and Jim’s new beginning together. Each leaf was carefully applied by hand, transforming every invitation into a miniature work of art.
The Result
The final product exceeded even our own expectations. We created more than wedding invitations—we crafted keepsakes that told the story of Vanessa and Jim’s romance whilst setting the perfect tone for their celebration.
The response from both the couple and their guests was overwhelmingly positive. Vanessa and Jim were delighted with how we’d captured their vision, whilst their guests were impressed by the artistry and attention to detail evident in every piece.
Reflecting on the Collaboration
Working with Vanessa Williams and Jim Skrip was an honour that pushed our creative boundaries and reinforced our belief that exceptional design requires understanding the personal story behind every project. Their trust in our team to bring their vision to life resulted in wedding stationery that was both beautiful and meaningful.
At Adorn Invitations, we believe that every couple deserves stationery that reflects their unique love story. Vanessa and Jim’s project exemplifies how collaboration, creativity, and craftsmanship can combine to create something truly extraordinary.
This project reminded us why we’re passionate about what we do—creating beautiful, bespoke pieces that capture the essence of love and celebration whilst serving as lasting mementos of life’s most precious moments.
